Opportunities and Issues for Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) Groups in Environmental Action

London Metropolitan University (Graduate Centre),

Holloway Road. London N7

10am – 4.30pm

The London 21 Sustainability Network invites you to a one-day conference to support and develop the engagement of the diverse communities of London in work on environment and sustainability issues. This event is run by London 21 and Islington Environment Forum in partnership with the UrbanBuzz programme and London Metropolitan University (London Met). It is supported by IVAC (Islington Voluntary Action Centre), Groundwork, Capacity Global and BTCV.

This year’s event will highlight and celebrate action and link it to local and regional policy agendas. It will include workshop sessions on:

· Food

· Waste and Recycling

· Climate Change

· Green Spaces

· Built Environment, Transport, Cycling

It will also focus on some specific themes:—

· What are the best ways of involving BAMER communities in environmental improvement?

· What support do minority groups need from public bodies and national environment groups?

· What examples do we have to show how action on the environment also builds stronger, more sustainable communities?

· How can we link work on practical, local issues such as food and waste with the big, global issue of adaptation to climate change?

· How can we translate heightened awareness of climate and related issues into engagement and action by minority groups?

The Conference welcomes participation by organisations representing and working with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) communities. It will also be of value to other environmental, voluntary and community organisations, to faith-based groups, to local councils seeking to engage on these issues with diverse communities and those working on regeneration and social development.

The Conference is free, but advance booking will be essential.
