Project Summary

The One Tree Hill Allotment Society, located in the London Borough of Southwark has been running for over 50 years. It was formed during the Second World Wars Dig for Victory campaign, and it currently receives no government funding. OTHAS is an independent organisation affiliated to the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardens. The land is rented off Southwark Council, and like most allotments OTHAS relies solely on its members annual membership fee for funding.

Information for Potential Members/Partners

Potential members must live in Southwark or Lewisham within close distance of the allotment site: Honor Park SE23. In addition members must supply their own tools, and organic gardeners are preferred. For more information visit the OTHAS website by clicking here.

Martin Smith, Representative of OTHAS is on the look out for potential, mutually beneficial partnership organisations to develop the current allotment project. He is also on the look out for some legal help due to an ongoing dispute with Southwark Council over the lease.

Problems and Prospects

The site has experienced problems with break-ins, vandalism, and burglaries. Consequently, the involvement of local schools at the allotments is being considered.

Currently, only 20% of members grow organically, and OTHAS Representative would eventually like to see the whole site go organic:
Pesticides and fertilizers are only a short term solution to a long term problem.

How Does OTHAS Contribute to Sustainability?

•  Conserving open space.
•  Teaching people where food comes from.
•  Donations of surplus food to friends/neighbours of members.
•  Promotes organic growing in London
