Paper is our bag: REUSABLE BAGS PROJECT
MAYOR Ken Livingstone and thelondonpaper have joined forces to cut down on the use of environmentally-damaging plastic bags in the Capital.
Each week Londoners pick up 42 million new plastic bags — more than 2 billion in a year. Only one in 200 bags is recycled while the rest go to landfill where they take up to 400years to break down. To combat the problem, the distributors gave away 10,000 Recycle for London reusable cotton bags in the West End with a recent issue of the paper.
If Londoners used 20 per cent fewer plastic bags, 11,000 tonnes of carbon emissions would be saved. The Mayor said: "Using fewer plastic bags and remembering to carry a reusable bag is a great way to brush up green credentials."
Stefano Hatfield, editor of thelondonpaper, said: "The environment is a top priority for Paper and our Readers. We fully support this project which will help reduce waste in the Capital."
