Who do you trust most when it comes to Environmental Issues?
Filed under: Government News Information, Communication & Research
The Eurobarometer Report published last month asked the above question in all 27 EU nations (they surveyed 1305 UK people): there’s some interesting (scary?) responses from the UK (see notes below for some comparisons) :—
National Government 6%
Regional / local Government 3%
European Union 2%
International organisations (United Nations, etc.) 9%
Companies 1%
Trade unions 2%
Political Parties standing for Environment (Greens, etc.) 5%
Environmental protection associations (Green Peace, World Wildlife etc.) 26%
Consumer associations and other citizens’ organisations 10%
Scientists 30%
Teachers at school or university 6%
Relatives\ family\ neighbours\ friends\colleagues 6%
Television 26%
The radio 9%
Newspapers 13%
None of them (spontaneous) 18%
Other 1%
DK 5%
Well…
1. The UK ‘Whinge culture’ of the Express, Mail etc. is certainly having an impact. 18% of people in the UK spontaneously volunteered ‘None of them’. This was far more than any other nation – only Spain at 13% comes close
2. The EU (responsible for much of our best environmental legislation) is trusted in the UK less than anywhere else.
3. We have one of the lowest levels of trust in Green organisations (26%) of anywhere (Belgium, Spain, Portugal a bit lower, while in Sweden trust hits 50%.
4. Trust in citizen / consumer organisations on the environment is low (10%), much higher in France (36%) and much lower in Belgium (3% - due to the fractured nature of that country?)
5. Trust in ‘scientists’ (sic) is the highest figure but still low - in 8 nations this is c. 50%
6. Companies are low everywhere (Denmark and Latvia rate 0%)
7. TV scores relatively highly (26%) — maybe because elsewhere 74% of people say this is their main source of information on the environment.
