The London Climate and Resources Map
The London Climate and Resources map is a tool being developed by the London Low Carbon Communities Network (LLCCN) to help any organisation in and around London looking to act on Climate Change. For action to develop and be effective it is important that those involved know where they can find support. It will offer practical answers to the question: ‘Climate Change — What’s going on and where can we get help?’
This will be an on-line interactive directory and map. It will list key resources and active organisations (and events) that are promoting and supporting sustainable / low carbon action, that can provide information, or are open to visitors or act as a model that can be replicated elsewhere. This map will have a number of ‘layers’ of information, each with its own distinctive ‘icon’. These layers may be (subject to discussion):1. Climate-focused bodies (including campaign groups, transition towns, local groups etc.)
2. Community / resource centres (including advice and volunteer centres)
3. Renewable energy projects, agencies and energy advice centres
4. City Farms and larger community gardens / food-growing / green spaces
5. Community health / well-being projects
6. Relevant education and training initiatives
7. Key ethnic minority / faith / cultural / refugee / organisations and networks
8. Time Banks and other local economic development projects
9. Community media organisations
10. Upcoming relevant events
The Map will be searchable by borough, by issue or by postcode. There may ultimately be 30 – 40 sites / per borough, leading to a map with some 1200 sites across London . This would link to other relevant maps, websites, networks etc. It would also be offered to a range of websites, organisations etc. as an asset to be linked to. Involved organisations will also be able to add themselves to the map (subject to approval), thus ensuring that it is a live and developing resource.
A workshop to develop the map will be held on January 13th at 6pm at University College London. If you would like to take part, please contact Chris Church (chrischurch@cooptel.net) in advance as numbers will be limited.
But before that an outline map will be prepared for discussion. That’s where we’d like your help now! We aim to put some 20+ projects / organisations on the map to get it started and help people see how it could work. So the question to you is:
What do you think are the most interesting projects and organisations (that will be useful to other people) that should be on a London climate resources map?
If you have 2 – 3 minutes to spare maybe you can send details of 1 or 2 projects. We need this core information:
· Name of organisation / project:
· Description (ten words or less, website link is fine)
· Address (the project needs to be put on a map – there needs to be a postcode!)
· What category (from those above) do you think it fits best in?
· Person to contact (name, email if poss.)
Please send this, in an email marked ‘London Map Info’ to Chris Church at the address above.
The work to develop this map is being done by Mapping for Change (MfC), a new social enterprise based in London that is currently developing similar maps in other regions. Other MfC maps are online at www.mappingforchange.org.uk Work will include workshops where organisations can learn how to use and feed into the map. An informal advisory group will help support development and moderation of the Map to prevent inappropriate additions. This is a project of the new London Low Carbon Communities Network (LLCCN), a network that has been set up to:
· Support existing action on climate change
· Engage and support new voluntary action groups
· Enable better cooperation between groups and sectors
