M&S sets its sights on becoming 'Closed Loop'

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has set its sights on becoming a fully 'closed loop’ Business as part of its plans to become the World’s most sustainable Retailer.
In its strongest public commitment to date on its intentions to become a closed loop business, the leading high street clothing retailer said today that it was working on a number of new "exciting initiatives" that will help it move towards closed loop, a business model where waste material used in the manufacturing process is returned back to that same process for re-use.
M&S has already achieved a number of closed loop projects, including reusing some of its own plastic waste to remake carrier bags and creating a ladies winter coat from recycled cashmere and wool that had been sourced from unwanted products returned to M&S. But few companies have adopted closed loop processes fully because it requires consumer engagement and new more efficient materials processing techniques.
