New DIY Community Action courses Sept 2010 - March 2011

Filed under:

Here are the courses being run under the DIY programme between
September 2010 and March 2011: some dates still to be confirmed.

Freebies 23 24 September 2010

We all know that money is important, but sometimes what you really
need is time, people and things. This course is for groups that want
to find free ways to make their project happen. This is not a
fundraising course.

Understanding Drugs 29 30 September 2010

A course to provide you with an understanding of drugs and substance
abuse. Essential information, especially for anyone working with
young people.

Garden Tool-banks 11 12 October 2010

Gardening equipment is expensive to buy, which means that some people
find it hard to maintain their garden. Untidy gardens create a poor
environment in your community and can lead to neighbour disputes.
Setting up a scheme to provide gardening tools for hire at a small,
affordable charge can have real benefits not just for the
appearance of your neighbourhood, but for community spirit as well.

Resolving Conflict (2 part course) 25 26 October and 6 7 December
2010

A two-part course that will help you resolve conflict on a personal
level or in the wider community. Focussing on developing skills such
as assertiveness and mediation, and where to go for outside help.

Avoiding Burnout 15 17 November 2010

As a Volunteer, are you feeling tired, exhausted, fed up with the
fact that it always seems like youre the one attending the meetings,
reading the paperwork, organising the events?

If you are feeling pretty burnt out right now, come on this course
and get back the positive feelings about why you volunteer.

Women as Heroes 17 18 January 2011

A popular course, just for women to give you time to think about
how you manage the balance between you life responsibilities and your
voluntary role in your community.

Keeping It Legal 15 16 February 2011

Is your group growing or changing? Do you want to be clearer about
different organisational structures and whether you are meeting your
legal obligations? Even small groups are accountable to their funders
and members

Employing Staff Date to be confirmed

Employing Staff for the first time should be exciting and
motivational, but it is sometimes also nerve-wracking and demanding.

This course is for groups that are planning to, or have just started
to, employ their own staff. This course will show you how to get
personnel, legal and management procedures in place and ensure the
experience is a positive one.

This course is an accredited course to level 2-3 Open College
Network.

Getting the Rules Right preparing or revising constitutions 21 22 March 2011

A course for small groups that need to write or revise their
constitution and standing orders. It will explain how constitutions
work, why they matter and what the requirements are for different
types of organisations.

The only cost to you is an administration charge of £20 per delegate.

This is an increase in the previous admin charge, the first increase
for over 4 years but still barely reflects the costs of admin for
your booking. By paying the £20 for admin costs, you then receive the training, all training materials, single en-suite accommodation and all meals and refreshments free if you are a volunteer in your
community.

To book a place on these courses or for more information, please
