London Waste and Recycling Board to be Created

Filed under: Government News  Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

The long term goal is for the Board to allocate £84 million over three years to waste projects in the capital, to help London reach its aim of managing 85% of the waste it creates by 2020.

If approved, the Order will create the London Waste and Recycling Board, a body responsible for providing a strategic scheme regarding waste management within the city.

This will include the composition of the board of directors’ membership, procedures and auditing guidelines for funding. The proposed cost of £84 million will be allocated towards new waste management projects throughout London.

The Order explains that the Board will be chaired by the Mayor or a representative of his choosing. In this case, Mayor Boris Johnson has agreed to chair the LWaRB, taking steps that Ken Livingstone, Johnson’s predecessor, had refused to do. Johnson chose to focus his energies on the formation of a Single Waste Authority for London instead. In addition to the Mayor’s role, there will be seven other board members. They will include four elected members of any London borough council and three independent members, two of whom will be appointed by the London councils and another by the Mayor. All members, with the exception of the mayor, will serve a four year term.
