I enjoyed taking part in the Civic Forum event yesterday; 'A model of community led regeneration and neighbourhood development?' It got me thinking about the journey we have taken up until now. The Olympics are much more important to us now that we have been able to get tickets or, for the less fortunate, have been able to join in with the Open Weekend.  I am of course, keen to see the Velodrome winning the stirling prize Stirling Prize - it’s a pretty exciting building.

As David Cameron declared yesterday that these would be the ‘Greatest Games’, this reminded me that when we set out they were heralded as being the 'Greenest Games'.  As we are all trading in superlatives, I am beginning to feel a little good about the work that LSx has done as part of the journey. We worked pretty hard in ensuring that these words greenest and greatest actually mean something. LSx were named in the bid, worked on the Assurance Framework, worked with the ODA on stakeholder engagement, supporting the Environmental Performance of the village  itself (through the panel) and now with our Transform Project, on which we are working with local people and our partners Groundwork

It's a good moment to pause and think how it all started, how good people like Richard Sumray kept the flag flying through the dark days, BEFORE working on the bid became socially acceptable.  Hats off all round……..

And now this autumn we are working on a series of seminars; Playing your Part actively supporting businesses to use the inspiration of the games;  Rob Richardson, Captain of the Sitting Volleyball team will our inspiration so check it out

Going Beyond the ‘Usual Suspects’ – how to engage with hardly reached communities on environmental issues

A recent LSx focus group found key recommendations for engaging hardly reached communities included: using and building on trusted local networks and sources, using alternative ways in that build on people’s values and emotions, demonstrating impacts using local examples and linking into existing activities or initiatives – and in the words of one participant, “…no cold calling!” LSx’s Energise London project focus group was held on 4th May 2011 with Queens Park community members to explore the most effective ways of engaging with communities that are not traditionally interested in environmental issues. Read the full report here.

State of the Environment Report for London
The Mayor’s recent SoE report shows encouraging trends for London, revealing a marked improvement in the capital’s environment over the past decade. Among other things, the report shows that Londoners now produce 10% less waste than they did a decade ago, and 32% of all household waste produced is recycled or composted. In terms of wildlife, 10.5 kilometres of river habitat has been improved, and the new addition of 228 hectares of coastal and floodplain grazing to London’s green habitats. In all, 21 of 28 'indicators' set out in the report were evaluated as 'improving.' In spite of these heartening results there is still progress to be made. The report emphasises the fact that our efforts need to be continued and increased in order to improve wellbeing in the capital. The latest State of the Environment findings are published here, and in an online database set up by the Mayor of London himself in an attempt to improve transparency and encourage accountability.

Hammersmith & Fulham roll out recycling scheme
Hammersmith and Fulham Council are due to start a new Flat recycling scheme this month, making it easier than ever before for residents who live in flats to recycle.  From July 18 to September, all households with access to Smart Banks will be given a new re-usable bag to make it even easier to store recycling and transport it to the recycling bank. With the recent 20% rise in price of rubbish disposal it’s now more cost-effective to recycle with the cost of recycling at £73 per tonne compared with £128 per tonne. For further information on the scheme please visit the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham website.

LSx was delighted to join Samantha Cameron, Peter Andre and Barbara Windsor at the Mayor’s launch of ‘Team London’ last month. Based on the hugely successful model pioneered by Mayor Michael Bloomburg of New York, the initiative aims to get 10,000 Londoners volunteering to support projects encouraging literacy, tree-planting, sports coaches, neighbourhood cohesion and uniformed youth leaders in London. As Mayor Boris enthused, ‘Team London is about what we can achieve when we act together,’ making volunteering easy to learn about and easy to do. If you want to see how LSx can help you volunteer in the capital, check out our pages on Energise London, Transform and Well London. For more information on Team London, see the GLA website.

LVSC Launches Big Squeeze Report 2011

Results of LVSC's latest Big Squeeze report show that Londoners are being hit harder than ever due to the continued impact of the poor economic climate and the current public sector spending cuts. It reveals a worrying trend, showing how the recent cuts are disproportionate to cost effective preventative services, particularly in the areas of health, advice, and children and young people. Now in its third year, LVSC's 'Big Squeeze' campaign hopes to influence policy and decision makers by understanding how recent cuts affect Londoners reliant on voluntary services.
