Olympian Waste Sculptures

Children sculpt heroes from headlines

Athens may be the home of the Olympic games, but youngsters from Wandsworth got down to the serious business of sculpting athletes at Battersea Summer Scheme in August.

The challenge, set by the Rethink Rubbish Western Riverside campaign was to create four, life- size Olympians; a runner, swimmer, diver and fencer, from rubbish. The children worked with local artists, Claire Freer and Sue Pritchard, from Art in the Park to make the papier mache statues from scrap wood and old newspapers, kindly donated by South London Press.

Jim Fielder Campaign Manager at Waste Watch said:

Through this project the children have taken items of rubbish and given them a new lease of life - whilst having great fun in the process. They have learnt about reusing and reducing rubbish as well as recycling; 60% of the contents of your bin can be used to make something else, rather than just going to the rubbish tips.
