Aims
To preserve the memory of the Creekmouth Community.
Main Activities
The Society is a relatively new group which aims to keep the history and memory of the Creekmouth Community alive so that there is recognition of the small Community that used to exist in Creekmouth. They research family history and have had an exhibition at Valence House Museum which included information about what was there and people who were there. With the new regeneration which will be occuring in Barking Riverside, the group hope to influence some of the street names to give recognition to the families and history of the area.
The old Creekmouth Village used to be arranged in two rows of Houses, and had a School (now where Squibbs is located), a Mission Hall, a shop and a pub, (The Crooked Billet). The Community was very isolated. Most people who lived there worked in the local Chemical Factory, or on the river, on the barges or as Lightermen.
